SIKH IN ASIA PACIFIC

INDONESIA
Although the earlier concentration of Sikhs was in North Sumatra but now many have moved to Jakarta area. Since Sikhism is not one of the religions recognised by the Government, Sikhs have to perforce declare themselves belonging to one of the recognised religions. The Sikhs of Sumatra showed high degree of leadership in building the first English medium Khalsa School, in Medan which had students not only from all over Indonesia but also from neighbouring countries.

FIJI
Sikhs migrated as free immigrants and not as indentured labour as in the case of majority of settlers.Sikh population is dwindling due to Governmental policies of discrimination against the Indians. A large number of Sikhs have moved out to greener pastures in the industrially developed countries. They were in the forefront in building Sikh institutions including Khalsa Schools/College which are still being well run.

PHILIPPINES
Majority of Sikhs are into money lending business. Its a unique system of loaning money to people at the bottom of the economic ladder without any paperwork whatsoever. It is a very popular activity and is akin to a very paperless, convenient, and informal credit card system. Over the last decade Sikh money lenders have been targeted resulting in several murders and extortions. The Sikhs are in majority among the Indian community.

HONG KONG
The community has moved forward over more than a century and a half of settlement from policemen, security guards, and door men to multi-faceted professions. They are well united in running only one Gurdwara which is well patronized.
